Mitchell Community College SGA Spotlight

Building Community Through Welcome Week
At Mitchell Community College, the Student Government Association (SGA) plays a vital role in fostering student engagement and success. One of their most impactful initiatives is Welcome Week—a tradition that ensures new and returning students start their academic journey on the right foot.
Joshua Davidson, SGA President, shared his experience in organizing this event over the past two years. Welcome Week is more than just a series of activities; it is a carefully curated experience designed to help students acclimate to their new schedules while reducing the stress that often accompanies the beginning of a semester.
“We’ve organized Welcome Week as a dedicated time to assist students in adjusting to their academic routines while also providing fun and engaging activities,” Davidson explained. “It creates an environment where students can connect, explore campus resources, and discover opportunities available to them.”
Throughout the week, students participate in a variety of events, including: ✅ Campus Tours – Helping students navigate their new academic home. ✅ Icebreaker Games – Encouraging social connections among peers. ✅ Informational Sessions – Providing essential academic and support resources. ✅ Social Mixers – Creating opportunities to meet new friends and mentors.
Beyond serving as an orientation-style event, Welcome Week cultivates a sense of belonging and community. Many students start the semester feeling uncertain, but by the end of the week, they’ve formed meaningful connections, gained confidence, and discovered key resources for success.
“For me, helping organize this event has been incredibly rewarding,” said Davidson. “I get to see firsthand the positive impact it has on students as they begin their college journey.”
The efforts of Mitchell Community College’s SGA in organizing Welcome Week showcase the power of student leadership in shaping a welcoming and supportive campus environment. Their commitment to fostering engagement and community is a true testament to the impact of student government in higher education.
